Pat Maguire, Past President of the Michigan AOH State Board, announced his intention to seek the office of National Director at the 2008 National Convention in New Orleans. Pat has been a member of the AOH for the past 34 years. He joined the Rahway, New Jersey Division # 3 in 1974 where he served as an active member and Division President for five years. In 1985, his career with General Motors took him to Adrian, Michigan. Shortly thereafter, Pat founded the St. Patrick's Division of Lenawee County and served as Division President for five years. In addition, he has held several offices within the Division, i.e., Recording Secretary, Right to Life Chairman, Historian, Editor/Publisher of the Division's newsletter Newsline, and Chair of several social functions. Pat's greatest accomplishment with the St. Patrick's Division was the creation of Michigan's only Hibernian An Gorta Mor Memorial, which was dedicated in September of 2004 in the Irish Hills district of Lenawee County. Pat raised more than $50,000 for the project, found the sculptor with whom he worked to design the monument and even arranged for stones to be shipped from Ireland. Pat eventually became involved in the Michigan State Board, where he held several positions such as State Historian and Right to Life Chairman. In 2003, he was elected President of the Michigan State Board and again in 2005 for a second two-year term. Born in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Pat and his wife Angela from Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, immigrated to the United States in 1964. They settled in Cranford, New Jersey where they lived for more than 20 years and raised their four children before moving to Adrian, Michigan where Pat was promoted to General Supervisor of the General Motors Adrian plant. After a successful 35-year career with GM, Pat retired in 1998 and became very involved in his local community. In 2002, he joined the Lenawee County Board of Habitat for Humanity and one year later was elected Board President. After completing his 3-year term as president, he continues to serve as a member of the board and chairman of the construction committee. During his term as president, he spearheaded the Habitat for Humanity resale store project, where he located a low-cost facility, arranged for the donations of household items, organized the inventory and hired a store manager. Today, the facility is thriving and raising thousands of dollars for Habitat. In 2001, Pat was named "Citizen of the Year" of Lenawee County for his hard work and dedication to serving the community. In addition to his work with Habitat, Pat was recognized for his volunteer work with the American Cancer Society, United Way/Boysville and Adrian East Side City Coalition. Pat and his wife are active members of their church, St. Joseph's in Adrian, where he serves as an usher, member of the finance committee, and chair of the building and grounds committee. "Without a doubt both Pat's professional and personal achievements are proof that he is a born leader and well suited to the office of National Board Director," said John McInerney, Michigan State Board President and Past National Director.
